Celia Tiernan passed away at the age of 89 years on June 30, 2026 due to complications from Colon Cancer. Beloved wife of the late Walter F. Tiernan. Loving mother of Gregory Walter Tiernan (Susan Lynn). Dearest grandmother of Morgan Sarah Tiernan and Mia Celia Tiernan. Sister of Maria Gaughan (Faraldo), and her late brothers Abel Faraldo and Joseph Faraldo.

Celia was the youngest of four siblings born to Marcelino and Maria Faraldo, immigrants from the small town of Betanzos, A Coruna Providence of the northwest part of Spain. Celia was born on the second floor of an apartment on the 300 block of South Street in Philadelphia on February 25, 1937. Celia and the Faraldo family moved in 1939 to the 600 block of American Street in the Pennsport neighborhood where Celia resided for the next 30 years of her life.

Celia attended John W. Hallahan High School for Girls and graduated in 1954 with honors in the top 1% of her class of 629 young women. As such, Celia was awarded a full academic scholarship to Rosemont college where Celia majored in Bio-Chemistry and minored in Spanish. Marcelino and Maria Faraldo were extremely proud of Celia as she was the first family member and only child to achieve a college degree in the United States. Upon Graduation of Rosemont College, Celia worked as a chemist in the Cancer Research Division of Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Celia married Walter Tiernan on October 28, 1967. They resided at 7901 Henry Avenue apartments for the next 4 years. Their only child, Gregory W. Tiernan was born in 1969 and baptized at Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM). In 1971, Celia and family moved back to American Street in Philadelphia for the next 11 yrs where they were an active member in the Queen Village Neighbors Association. In 1982, Celia and family moved to the Andorra Section of Philadelphia where they resided for the next 37 years of their lives as an integral member of the IHM community.

Celia Tiernan also spent 16 years working for the City of Philadelphia as a Library Assistant in many branches throughout Philadelphia. Celia Tiernan retired from the City of Philadelphia in 1997 and spent her remaining years focused on her husband and grandchildren.

Her Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at 10:30AM in the Sacred Heart Chapel at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish (located behind rectory), 819 Cathedral Road, Philadelphia, PA 19128. Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation on Thursday morning from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM in the Chapel prior to Mass.

Interment will take place in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham.
