Jack Cooney

John P. "Jack" Cooney, age 94, of Philadelphia, PA passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025.He was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 17, 1931, the son of the late Patrick and Catherine (née Jennings) Cooney.

Jack was raised in Fairmount and lived most of his life in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia. He was a graduate of Roman Catholic High School and a parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. He was a Phillies fan and enjoyed trips to the casinos. Prior to his retirement, he had a long career as a Warehouseman for A & P Supermarkets. 

He honorably served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. 

He was the husband of the late Jeanette Cooney (née Dziekonski). 

He is survived by four sons, John “Jack” (Marie) Cooney of Plymouth Meeting, Michael Cooney of Roxborough, Kevin Cooney of Roxborough, and Jeffrey Cooney of East Norriton; brother, Thomas Cooney of Houston, TX; sister, Catherine Gavaghan of Philadelphia; five grandchildren, Sean, Jonathan, Laura, Audrey, and Clarissa; and many nieces and nephews.

Along with his wife and parents, Jack was preceded in death by two infant sons, Brian and Daniel Cooney; and sister, Marguerite "Peggy" Gannon. 

His Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, November 6, 2025 at 12:30 PM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 819 Cathedral Road, Philadelphia, PA 19128. Relatives and friends are invited to the viewing on Thursday, November 6 from 11:30 AM to 12:15 PM at the Church prior to Mass.

Interment will take place in Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA. 

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Roman Catholic High School, 301 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19107.
